Richard B. Penfield, DMD

I get a great deal of pleasure when my patients return in retainers and I see their beautiful teeth. I always ask them if they like their smile and tell them how great they look. Working with young people every day gives me a perspective on another segment of the population that I would never be aware of. It gives me a little younger outlook on life, and I love it!

In order to become an orthodontist, I first attained my Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL. I then attended the University of Alabama, where I earned my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. Afterward, I attained my Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Louisville.

Continuing Education

I participate in numerous forms of continuing education each year in areas of infection control, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, current topics and techniques in orthodontics and in general dentistry as well. I learn about modern techniques and orthodontic methods in order to provide efficient and comfortable treatments for my patients.

As a part of my continuing education, I am an active member of these professional organizations:

Professional Experience

After graduating from Spring Hill College I spent the next four years obtaining by dental degree from the University of Alabama. From 1971 to 1973 I served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Dental Officer and saw duty both with the Marines at Parris Island, S.C.and on board the USS Jason which was home ported in SanDiego, California. I still fully support our troops in all their missions. In 1973 I began two years of training at the University of Louisville and earned my post doctorate certificate in orthodontics. I have been practicing orthodontics since 1975.

Family and Community

I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Birmingham when I was four. My lovely wife, Sally, and I have a son Richard. He is a commercial airline pilot and he lives in Atlanta with his wife, Miranda. In my spare time I enjoy fly fishing for trout, jogging, tennis, and yard work. I was president of the Sertoma Club for one of the five years I was a member. I have attended St. Peters Catholic church for 36 years and counting!
